Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
