2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming seems especially strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer natural design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of unique mechanics.
Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.
If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
